William Wood, London, 1839. 4 volumes, 8vo, full brown calf red morocco labels, 54 hand colored plates, vi, [2], 266, xii, pp. Wear and scuffing to leather; penciled corrections throughout, foxing and soiling to plates; good. William Wood (1774-1857) was a bookseller and noted conchologist. In 1807 he published his zoogeography, The Beauties of Nature Displayed, which was followed by his General Concology in 1815. These works established Wood as a natural historian. In 1812, he was elected fellow of the Royal Society.The present work was originally issued in parts during 1833-1838. While attractive and presenting plenty of detail, the plates are rather busy, containing 36 insects per plate. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
