[Pentecostal]. [Holiness]. Mevis, Greenly.
Beginning and Ending, or Spiritual Childhood and Manhood, by Greenly Mevis, Waukesha, Wis
[Waukesha, Wisconsin: n. p.], 1890. First edition.. Small tear from the blank lower corner of the final leaf; cheap paper a little browned; some wear and light soiling; in good condition.. 8vo, self-wrappered pamphlet, 14, [1] pages. ìPopular education has become a mighty god, and he that will not bow down to it and its votaries, may expect the fiery furnace, which some are passing through today.î A rare holiness or even proto-Pentecostal tract (given the emphasis on rebirth in the Holy Spirit) from a prolific lay author. Mevis (1818-1894) was, per his obituary, a cooper in Waukesha who had ìwritten, published at his own expense, and distributed free thousands of tracts on religious subjects.î This tract has sharp words on college-educated preachers and praise for continuing revelation. Despite the posthumous claim of prolific publication, OCLC (2/2017) notes but a single title by Mevis (an 1894 edition of his Overcoming Grace, with Consecration Made Plain: Two Tracts in One) at Aurora University only; this title not located on OCLC.
