Stephani, 1545. 8vo (16.5 cm, 6.5"). 141, [3] pp. Early edition of the first Estienne children's book to be written using original information "drawn from Charles's own great interest in botany" (Schreiber) to describe and name many plants and trees, with an introductory letter from Charles Estienne to his 17-year-old nephew Henri and an extensive index.    The title-page bears the iconic Estienne olive tree device, and the text is neatly printed in single and double columns using italic and roman type with a few words in Greek. This is the fifth Estienne edition of many after the first of 1539, with the content later incorporated into the 1554 Praedium rusticum; Mortimer references Armstrong's observation that "the experience with competitive editions of this text may have changed Robert Estienne's attitude toward obtaining privileges for his publications," suggesting this was => a turning point for more than just his juvenile literature.    Binding: Modern red morocco, spine with raised bands and lettered in gilt, gilt fillet along board edges, elaborate gilt decorative turn-ins; marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, and green ribbon bookmark present. => Signed by French binders Trautz-Bauzonet.    Provenance: Pencilled collation note at rear from the Quaritch firm; at front a gorgeous bookplate of the Horticultural Society of New York dated October 1934 noting volume as a bequest of Kenneth K. Mackenzie.
