An Indian Album.
London: Batsford Ltd,, 1945-6. Octavo. Original orange cloth, titles to spine and front cover in blue. With the decorated dust jacket. Frontispiece and 95 monochrome photographic plates. Slightly bowed, head of spine lightly discoloured, some very light foxing. A very good copy in the dust jacket, spine panel faded, spine panel chipped at head very marginally affecting title, extremities slightly chipped. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "With all fond wishes from Cecil Beaton". The recipient, Hugh Francis, has written his ownership signature above. A "Hugh Francis" appeared in the 1971 film Beaton by Bailey, David Bailey's documentary profile of Beaton. Best known for his ultra-glamorous photos of the rich and famous, Beaton was commissioned by the Ministry of Information during the Second World War to photograph the war effort not only in Britain but in Asia and the Middle East. His tour of Asia led to three photographic albums: Far East (1945), An Indian Album (1945–6), and Chinese Album (1945–6).
