Atherton, Gertrude (1857-1948)
THE DOOMSWOMAN
New York: Tait, Sons & Company, 1893. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Set in the waning days of Mexican California, this historical novel drew comparisons with Helen Hunt Jackson's Ramona and praise from the likes of Ambrose Bierce who described it as "superior to any that any Californian has done." Inscribed and dated in the year by Atherton to fellow California writer Charles Warren Stoddard (1843-1909) on the front pastedown. Stoddard was a poet and journalist who edited the influential Overland Monthly with Bret Harte and Ina Coolbrith, a collaboration that earned them the nickname the "Golden Gate Trinity," as well as a pioneering figure in San Francisco's LGBT history. Octavo. Original cloth binding, with gilt titles. Near fine.
