Eckartshausen, Karl von
Nastavlenie mudrago ispytannomu drugu, iz sochinenii G. Ekkartsgauzena [A wise man's instruction to his worldly friend, from the works of G. Eckartshausen]
Shanghai: Slovo, 1937. First edition thus. Second edition, with a facsimile title page of the 1803 edition published by the Imperial Printer in St. Petersburg (translated by Aleksandr Labzin). Octavo (20 × 14 cm). Original decorative wrappers; 71 pp. Wrappers very slightly dust-soiled; owner inscription inside front wrapper; else very good. The scarce third edition of this Russian translation of part of "Die wichtigsten Hieroglyphen für's Menschenherz," a work by the German Catholic mystic Karl von Eckartshausen (whose first name initial is here and in the original edition erroneously transliterated). This translation by A. F. Labzin first appeared in 1803 and again in 1817. An example of Russian émigrés' turn to mysticism in search for answers to contemporary problems. A new one-page preface states: "This book was apparently written in response to the trend of denying spirituality and the interest in positivistic knowledge which already began at the time [in 1803]... Let this reprint once again go out into the world as a White warrior to continue the fight with dark powers. After all, books are now the same as warriors! The battle is waged everywhere." The book also played an important role in Masonic circles of the Russian emigre community. KVK, OCLC only show the copies at Madison-Wisconsin and Princeton.
