[The Great Kanto Earthquake in Pictures].
Osaka.: Various publishers.. 1923.. Collection of 5 items, 3 newspapers and two pictorial souvenir style publications in wrappers, chiefly black and white photographic illustrations, with a few in colour and maps: 関東大震災画報 (Kantōdaishinsai gahō), 34 leaves loosely inserted in original wrappers, staples missing, text in Japanese with English captions laid down beneath each image. Appears to be complete but as there is no pagination nor list of contents we cannot be sure. 関東震災画報: Earthquake Pictorial Edition, Part One. Upper cover present but detached, inscription on title page, text in Japanese and English. 2 Western Newspapers from September 27, 1923 covering the earthquake, 20 pages each: "The Daily Mirror" and "Daily Sketch", folded in half with wear along fold, browned, a little marked and worn. The International Graphic Vol 2. No. 12, 関東大震災写 (Kantōdaishinsai utsushi); colour folding maps and some colour illustrations showing buildings prior to the event, chiefly monotone photographic illustrations, original wrappers browned and torn with loss, some amateur cellotape repairs at spine. The event, known in Japanese as 関東大震災 (Kantō Daishinsai) occurred on the September 1st 1923. The damage caused by the magnitude 8 earthquake killed in total over 100,000 people and sparked a tsunami and fire tornados. In Tokyo alone the devastation was such that it took two full days to extinguish the blaze that devastated the city. The total repair cost is estimated in todays terms to have cost more than $14 billion. .
