Original vertical-ribbed blue cloth, blind compartments to spines enclosing gilt titles and decoration including a large block of the Philippine arms, blind Moorish ropework border to sides, fore and bottom edges untrimmed, yellow surface-paper endpapers. Engraved portrait frontispieces with tissue guards, title pages printed in red and black. Contemporary bookseller's blind-stamp (Simms of Manchester) to front free endpapers; ownership inscriptions to front pastedown and free endpaper of vol. 1. Spines rolled, tips bumped, light spotting to prelims and final few leaves of vol. 1, more strongly in vol. 2, vol. 1 sig. U and vol. 2 sig. Y loose at head, both held by the lower cords. A very good copy in the bright original cloth. First UK edition, complete as issued in two volumes; a third volume was published by Routledge in 1859. Prescott (1796-1859) has been called America's first scientific historian, and his "graceful, authoritative narratives of Spanish military, diplomatic, and political history … had no equal in their time" (Ency. Brit.) An attractive set of a work originally published in Boston earlier the same year (the third volume was also first issued there, in 1859).
