Bonaventure Corneille Bertram
De Republica Ebraeorum.
Leiden: Johannes Maire, 1641 First edition. 24mo (10,8 x 5,7 cm). (48), 452, (22) pp. Contemporary overlapping full vellum. Spine with handwritten title in ink. This is a study on the old Hebrew institutions and history. The Protestants of the young Dutch Republic were at the time of publication very much interested in descriptions of antique Republican states, that could serve as models for the modern Republican state. In 1632, the Elzeviers from Leiden had (re)published Cuneus' "De Repvblica Hebraeorvm" in their series of Republics (Willems 362). Title printed in red and black and with Maire's device. Especially in the Annotations many sections printed in Greek, Arabic or Hebrew type. Three decorated 4-line woodcut initials. Imprint of old library ticket on spine, very faint waterstains, but otherwise a very good copy. For a full description and more images please visit .
