This work contains a general description of the geography, history, culture &c of the Swiss region Valais, but contains also "De Alpibvs Commentarius", the first work exclusively devoted to the Alps. The first two books of this work constitute together a monograph on the Valais region. "De Alpibvs Commentarius" gives a general description of the Alps. It is a collection of all that had been written on the Alps by classical authors, as well as by modern ones and together it gives a complete overview of what was known then. "De Sedunorum thermis" provides a description of the Valais thermae and different cure sources. This trait by Caspar Collinus, an apothecary from Valais had already been included in the original edition from 1574. The engraved title page by Cornelis Claeszoon Duysend, depicting a symbolic figure, pouring water with fishes out of an amphora and representing the source of the river Rhone, flowing from Valais into the lake of Geneva. With three headpieces and several 4- and 5-line decorated woodcut-initials. Excellent and remarkably fresh copy. Rare. For a full description and more images please visit .
