Small 8vo, approximately 165 x 105 mm, 6½ x 4 inches, title page printed red and black, pages: [8], 212, [2]= (errata), LACKS FOLDING MAP as often, now supplied with a modern facsimile on old paper, plus an added early (c.1719) original hand coloured map of China, bound in full antique mottled calf, gilt ruled border to covers, raised bands to spine, gilt decoration in compartments, recent gilt lettered morocco label, marbled endpapers. Head and tail of spine and hinges rubbed and slightly tender, tiny chip of leather missing at top of upper and lower hinges, original front endpaper and title page slightly browned, most pages lightly browned, occasional light spotting to margins, small ink marks to 4 margins, ink spot on 2 text pages, no loss, small brown stain to fore-edge margin of last 4 leaves, slightly trimmed copy, no loss, lacking final blank endpaper which is counted in the collation(P4). A good copy (lacking the original map as noted). John Webb (1611-1672) was an architect and amateur scholar born in Somerset. He married the niece of Inigo Jones and became his personal assistant from 1628. On Jones' death in 1652, Webb inherited both a substantial fortune and his library of drawings and designs. In 1654 Webb designed the first classical portico on an English country house, at The Vyne in Hampshire. This book is the first extensive treatise on the Chinese language in any European language.
