Jean-Pierre Solie (first owner)
Sammelband of 6 French plays, for which the music of at least 4 plays was composed by Solie. Extensive MS annotations throughout
Paris: v.p., 1791-1792. Very good antiquarian condition. 8vo. Contemporary blue mottled boards, green vellum spine, upper cover lettered in gilt: "Mr. Solie." Pastedowns lifting, revealing binding structure. Front pastedown with contemporary MS listing contents of the volume (joints splitting but perfectly sound). An extraordinary survival. Of the six plays bound in this volume, the first owner was the composer of the music for four of them -- if not all six (see below). Furthermore, there are extensive MS annotations in four of the plays, likely in the hand of the composer. The volume was bound for Jean-Pierre Solie (1755-1812), whose name appears on the front cover in gilt. Solie was a French cellist, operatic singer, and prolific composer who specialized in one-act comic dramas, as are represented herein. In our copy the first four plays are heavily marked up with revisions and numbered references to songs. Among these four annotated plays are "Fanfan et Colas" (1791) and "La Fille Naturelle" (1792) for which the name of the composer is no longer known. Did Solie compose the music for these two plays? Implicit evidence in the present volume suggests that he may well have been! CONTENTS: 1. De Jaure (Dejaure). Le Franc Breton ou le Negociant de Nantes.
