Eadmer.
Eadmeri monachi cantuariensis Historia novorum, sive sui saeculi libri VI res gestas (quibus ipse non modò spectator diligens sed comes etiam & actor plerunq[ue] interfuit) sub Guilielmis I & II & Henrico I Angliae regibus ab anno nempè Salutis MLXVI ad MCXXII potissimùm complexi. In lucem ex Bibliotheca Cottoniana emisit Ioannes Seldenvs, & notas porrò adjecit & spicilegium.
Londini: Typis & impensis Guilielmi Stanesbeij, ex officinis Richardi Meighen & Thomae Dew Folio (33 cm; 13"). [4 (including initial blank!)] ff., xvi, 218 pp., [1 (blank)] f.; illus.. 1623 Editio princeps of the monk Eadmer's early-12th-century chronicle covering the Norman period of English history beginning with King Edgar. John Selden edited the text from a manuscript in the fabled Cotton Collection and in doing so presented England with "one of the ablest and valuable writings" since Bede (Encyclopædia Britannica, 11th ed.). Eadmer was a Benedictine monk who was an intimate of St. Anselm, and his biographer. Eadmer died around 1124. The title-page is printed in black and red, the text is in roman and italic type with bits of black-letter, and the margins have side- and shouldernotes. Leaves T3.4 are a cancel bifolium, as is apparently so in all copies. => There is a large woodcut on p. 166 of the seal of William the Conqueror. Provenance: Early 18th-century signatures in upper margin of title-page of James Worsley (probably of Pylewell Park, Hants.) and Peter La Neve (the Norroy King at Arms); later 18th-century ownership of Henry Whetonhall of Pecham in same margin. Late 17th-century speckled calf, abraded with scrapes; rebacked with new red spine label, new marbled endpapers. A waterstained copy and priced accordingly, the waterstaining being throughout and well across most pages, but typically not darker than "moderate"; complete, and with an interesting provenance.
