Eglentiers poëtens borst-weringh.Amsterdam, Paulus van Ravesteyn for Jan Evertsz. Cloppenburgh, 1619. 4to. Contemporary vellum.
Alblas, pp. 50-51; Borst & Verkruijsse, eds., pp. 486-487; Praz, p. 475. First edition, in Dutch, of a remarkable example of the cross-fertilization of English and Dutch literature in the early 17th century. Rodenburgh's Dutch adaption of Sir Philip Sidney's The defence of poesie (1595) and of excerpts from Thomas Wilson's The arte of rhetorique form the theoretical prose core of the present work about poetry and expresses this view as well. Rodenburgh complemented it with a great number of exemplary poems, short verse plays, occasional verse and emblematic poems, both borrowed and original, many published here for the first time. With early notes about the content on an endleaf. With occasional minor stains, mostly in the foot margin, a couple small marginal tears and a few tiny marginal worm holes, but otherwise in very good condition and with generous margins. With the vellum slightly soiled and one headband partly detached, but binding still good. A landmark in the history of Dutch poetry.
