Octavo, [viii], 232 pp, three gatherings a little wormed at the bottom blank margin, an attractive uncut copy in twentieth century green polished quarter calf, spine a bit sunned, original blue wrappers bound in. Scarce and informative early nineteenth century book on olive horticulture.Published as part of a government initiative to promote olive growing, this prints letters exchanged between producers and the Conseil d'agriculture, including discussion of the effects of ambient day and night temperatures on fruiting, relationships between soil quality and structure and the oil quality, solar exposure of olive groves effects of prolonged frosts, regional varieties and the merits of strains cultivated in the Southern Mediterranean and North Africa.Some of the correspondence is regionally specific, with reference to French olive oil production in Montpellier, Vaucluse, and other localities.This copy is from the famous natural history collection of Arpad Plesch, with his bookplate.
