UPTON, Roger D
Newmarket & Arabia
London: Henry S. King & Co., , 1873. An Examination of the Descent of Racers and Coursers. Octavo. Original rust cloth, title in gilt to spine and upper board, panelling in black to the boards, large gilt block of a horse's head to the upper board, invisible green surface-paper endpapers. Hand-coloured steel-engraved frontispiece, 4 folding pedigrees at the rear. Very slight rubbing at the extremities, corner tips and head and tail of the spine, foxing to verso of frontispiece, light toning else, but a very nice copy. First edition. Upton was one of the early experts on the bloodlines of British Thoroughbreds. Shortly after the publication of this work - intended to "point out errors that have been committed in the breeding of our horse" - he travelled in Arabia to obtain purebred horses to improve the quality of British cavalry remounts, Upton served with the 9th Lancers. This copy inscribed verso of the front free endpaper; "Dr. Bell with the best regards of the Author, May 1873."
