London, printed T. N. Longman and O. Rees, 1799.With an appendix. In which are included, three letters of Gray's, never before published in this country. FIRST EDITION 1799, 8vo, approximately 205 x 125 mm, 8 x 5 inches, pages: xvi, 1 - 544, including Notes and Errata, bound in full contemporary speckled calf, narrow gilt bands to spine, gilt lettered red morocco label. A few worm holes to spine, small old scrape to lower corner of upper cover, small armorial bookplate of J. G. Mazziotti on front pastedown, small blind Mazziotti library stamp on title page, light browning to title page, following 2 leaves and last 6 leaves, some further light browning or pale foxing throughout. Otherwise a very good tight copy. "The first six letters were written to - - - von Kopken ... and the last to the poet Salis. - - The rest are addressed to Charles von Bonstetten ... They were published [with title: Briefe von F. Matthisson] at Zurich in ... 1795, in two ... volumes." (Advertisement by the translator). The letters contain interesting descriptions of travel, and many anecdotes of Klopstock, Wieland, Herder, Burger, and other German writers.
