William Wickel. - The anonymous author of this extensive description of Batavia claims to have received most of his information directly from the high officials of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) residing in Batavia. Information on the trade of the VOC in the East Indies is given. 'Batavia, capital city of the Netherlands Indies, site of a VOC post from 1610, and founded in 1619 by J.P. Coen, as regional headquarters for the Dutch East Indies Company, on the site of the Banten port of Jayakarta. It was first constructed as a Dutch city, complete with canals and walls to resist attack from Mataram, and much of the surrounding countryside was cleared of its inhabitants to create a kind of cordon sanitaire around the city.
