De Worde, Wynkyn] Jacobus de Voragine [Leaf Book]
The Golden Legende [Original Leaf from Wynkyn de Worde's 1498 Printing of the Golden Legend]
New York: Dauber & Pine Bookshops, Inc.. New York: Dauber & Pine Bookshops, Inc. 1498. () [4]. Very good. Quarto. Original leaf from the Golden Legend mounted and bound into quarter leather and marbled paper-covered leaf book. Gilt and brown morocco spine label to front board. Spine has been consolidated with discrete professional restoration. Edges of boards lightly rubbed. Original leaf is age-toned with some minor foxing to margins. Impression is strong with a quarter-page woodcut on verso. Leaf measures approximately 10.75" X 7.5". With a single leaf title page from the Dauber and Pine Bookshops. An excellent leaf with a quarter-page woodcut from this famous English-language incunable. The leaf, "folio Cixvi" comprises the final two pages of the Life of Saint Peter and the very start of the Life of Saint Paul. The quarter-page woodcut on the verso of the leaf is of Saint Paul with book and sword. Wynkyn de Worde was an apprentice of England's first printer, William Caxton, and is generally credited with refining Caxton's techniques and becoming England's first true typographer. This de Worde edition is just the second by him and the fourth overall printing of Caxton's translation of the Golden Legend. An excellent leaf, attractively presented, made especially desirable with the Life of Saint Peter and woodcut of Saint Paul. Scarce. Not in Disbound and Dispersed..
