London: Alexander Strahan, 1867. First edition. A Very Good + (for this title) copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original maroon cloth (expected light sunning to the spine, modest shelf wear to the boards and modest wear to the spine ends, horizontal crack below "TROLLOPE" on the spine and some minor loss to spine's upper left edge); a collection of ten short stories first individually published in various magazines of which only one book edition was published in this, the original, form. Strahan, the collection's Publisher, proposed to Trollope this volume gathering the ten stories together in book form form the first time. Upon receiving Strahan's letter, Trollope wrote a note upon it reading "Tales of All Countries: Third Series", thus showing his intent that the stories continue in the series of short stories in book form already begun, but which earlier volumes were not very successful commercially. Strahan proposed that they give the collection a more distinctive title and that the collection be published in two volumes, a more profitable format for the Publisher. (This history produced a rumor that lasted into the early 1900s that there was a third installment in Trollope's "Tales of All Countries" Series that was simply too scarce to be found.)
