London - Nicholas Bourne, 1639 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A scarce edition of this important medical work from the seventeenth century. Bound by C. Cooper (binder's label to front pastedown). With decorative head and tail pieces. Pages 194 is incorrectly labelled as 164, and page 211 is labelled as 207. The erratic pagination is typical of this work. Includingone engraved platedepicitingsurgical implements (one of four only), and a folding table. John Woodall (15701643) was an English military surgeon, Paracelsian chemist, businessman, linguist and diplomat. He made a fortune through the stocking of medical chests for the East India Company and later the armed forces of England. He is remembered for his authorship of The Surgeon's Mate which was the standard text to advise ships surgeons on medical treatments while at sea and contains an advanced view on the treatment of scurvy. The first edition of The Surgeon's Mate was published in 1617. Later editions contained treatise onfor the better curing of Wounds made by Gunshotof that most fearefull and contagious Disease called the Plagueand A Treatise of Gangrena. . . chiefly for the Amputation or Dismembering of any Member of the mortified part. Condition: Rebound in full calf. Externally smart, though with some slight fading and some marks. Internally, firmly bound. Some pages have been expertly repaired, although there is still some loss to the original pages. G2 missing. Ink annotations to the text. Pages have some tidemarks and spotting throughout.
