Contemporary half calf over marbled boards, raised bands, extra gilt, gilt titles to red and green labels. Marbled endpapers and edges. Rubbing to extremeties, gilt rubbed and faded to spines. Chip to volume label of volume I, a little wear to head of spine to volume II. The set shows well and is clean internally, without writing or other marks. Edited, annotated and with an introduction by Rev. Henry Christmas, the Librarian at Sion College. Calmet's influential work on angels, demons, spirits and vampires, originally published in French in 1746, first appeared in an anonymous English translation in 1759. This translation is taken from the two volume 1751 third edition, a much expanded and revised version, and the last to be corrected by Calmet himself. Coumont [C7.9]
