Full blue-green crushed morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe for Brentano's of New York, spines gilt in compartments between five raised bands, gilt titles in two compartments and dated at foot, bevelled covers with wide gilt borders, board edges ruled in gilt; beige morocco doublures and moiré silk endpapers, the front doublures each with an oval hand-painted miniature portrait (vol. 1, Goldsmith; vol. 2, Samuel Johnson; vol. 3, David Garrick) under curved glass set in the centre, the doublures decorated all over in gilt with floral tools with orange and yellow onlays, the portrait oval surrounded by a gilt wreath and with the subject's name lettered in gilt on a blue banner below; turn-ins elaborately gilt; gilt edges. Copiously extra-illustrated throughout with engravings, portraits, maps, taken from a variety of sources. A fine set. First edition, a handsome three-decker set in lavish Cosway-style bindings, housed in their original leather-entry slipcase, with portraits of Goldsmith, Johnson and Garrick. After his magisterial Life of Dickens, this is probably the best remembered of Forster's many literary biographies.
