Philadelphia:: Carey, Lea, and Blanchard.. 1838.. 16mo, signed in 8s. 5-5/16" x 3-5/8". 1st edition thus (American Imprints 49619 & 50086). 'From the Latest London Edition". Often termed the 1st US edition, though at this remove it is difficult to determine with certainty, as Wiley et al also issued an 1838 edition (cf. American Imprints 49618 & VanderPoel B473). Not recorded in any of the major Dickens bibliographies noteworthy for US editions (e.g., Edgar & Vail, Gimbel, the McGuire Collection [Sumner & Stillman #36], VanderPoel or Wilkins). Not in the NUC. 112; 109 pp.. Original publisher's brown muslin cloth with printed paper title label to front board.. VG+ (spine sunned/some perimeter chipping to printed title. label/usual sporadic, though unobtrusive, paper staining & browning. throughout).. Somewhat uncommon edition of these works, the latter being Dickens' ripostŽ to Quiz's less-than-PC 'Ladies.'
