Jules Verne
1894. hardcover. Verne, Jules. THE SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT. Or The Adventures of Claudius Bombarnac. New York: Lovell, Coryell & Company, n.d. [1894]. 10 pp (paginated 3-12) undated ads. Original tan cloth pictorially decorated in brown.
First American Edition, the only Verne title published by this publisher. As noted in T&M, the U.S. Book Company copyrighted this tale (titled CLAUDIUS BOMBARNAC) in September 1894, and two copies were deposited, but no such book was ever published. On October 9th they copyrighted the same tale as SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT. (It was also during the month of October that Sampson Low published its edition in London.) Then on November 10th, Lovell Coryell published THE SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT (adding a "THE"), with 52 illustrations, as here (Lovell Coryell was affiliated with United States Book Co., and the latter's copyright appears on this copy's copyright page). It was also so issued in wrappers. By December, E. A. Weeks of Chicago also came out with an edition of this title.

This is a very good-plus copy (minor soil and edge-wear, marginal chip in one ad leaf, faint crease in rear board). This is one of the toughest American Vernes to find, and this is only the second copy we have seen in thirty years. Taves & Michaluk V040.
(Sumner & Stillman Code:11924)
