Folio (382 x 262mm). pp. (36), xii, (4), 205, (48), with title printed in red and black and engraved title-vignette, 1 engraved folded map, 1 engraved portrait (of the author) and 33 engraved plates. Contemporary calf, spine in 7 compartments with gilt lines and gilt lettered label. First edition of the author's prominent work, in which he developed his study of sexual characteristics. However Vaillant died before his work could be published. The preface is by H. Boerhaave, written in French and Latin. The 'Botanicon' is remarkable for its treatment of Cryptogams, as it describes 131 species of Fungi. The 33 delicately engraved plates, depicting 354 figures of plants, are by Claude Aubriet (1665-1742; 'peintre du Cabinet du Roy'), one of the finest botanical draughtsmen of his time.
