Mariana Alcoforado (1640-1723) was a Portuguese nun. This book contains five love letters of her, addressed to Noël Bouton, the Marquis of Chamilly, which gained fame as the "Lettres portugaises" (1669). Exists a debate on the author's identity: although a real nun existed under the name Mariana Alcoforado, some argued the work is a product of Gabriel-Joseph de Lavergne, comte de Guilleragues (1628-1684), who was a French politician of the 17th century. A rare, richly illustrated Czech book. In original illustrated hard paper. Untrimmed as published. Illustrated title page. Decorated with numerous woodcut tail-pieces and initials. Pages ruled by brown frame. Three chromolithographs by Franti?ek Kysela mounted on black paper with the original patterned tissue guards [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
