Bowles, Paul
The Sheltering Sky (With The Scarce Promotional Band)
A First Printing published by John Lehmann in 1949. The BOOK is in VERY GOOD + condition. It shows signs of edge-wear and rubbing. The boards are bumped at the corners and the spine ends are mildly pushed. The spine is a little cocked. There is some fading of colour to the lower spine and less so to the upper spine. The text block is spotted and lightly encroaches on to the page margins in places , the fly papers and first few leaves. This post war production was renowned for using cheap quality paper and it is inevitable that there is the presence of some spotting. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near FINE condition. The rear panel is only lightly marked and spotted. The wrapper has benefitted from some expert professional restoration to the spine ends and upper rear cover edge - This is not noticeable from the front and in fact the restoration appears seamless. The white panels on the spine are only mildly toned. All in all a very attractive wrapper with the Fred Uhlman design looking striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The very scarce 'Evening Standard Book Of The Month' Promotional Band is also present and is complete. It is in near Fine condition. One of only 4,000 copies printed. Bowles' epic first novel, a keystone of Beat literature, in its sought-after original British publication. Named by Time magazine as one of the 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923-2005. Extremely scarce to find in such collectible condition.
