London. Hodgson & Graves. [ 1837]. Roberts, David (British artist, 1796-1864). W. Gauci (lith). Tinted lithograph with handcolor, mounted on thick card as issued, image 10 3/4 x 15 inches on sheet size 17 3/4 x 22 inches. Overall light soiling to support card (not affecting the image), two tiny spots in image (just to the left of the rock), light undulation to the paper; overall image in very good condition. This impressive view of the Rock of Gibraltar is plate 25 from the deluxe first edition of David Roberts' first published set of views "Picturesque Sketches in Spain Taken During ye Years 1832 & 1833." Delicately handcolored colored at the time of publication, this edition, which was issued in a portfolio, cost more than double the standard edition. The plates were lithographed by many of the most talented lithographers of the day, this by W. Gauci. Abbey (#152) notes that Roberts in fact worked on every stone, and that the views had an enormous sale, going through many printings.
