De Worde, Wynkyn] Jacobus de Voragine [Leaf Book]
The Golden Legende [Original Leaf from Wynkyn de Worde's 1498 Printing of the Golden Legend]
New York: Dauber & Pine Bookshops, Inc., 1498. Undetermined. very good. [4]pp. Quarto. Original leaf from the Golden Legend mounted and bound into quarter leather and marbled paper-covered leaf book. Gilt and brown morocco spine label to front board. Spine with discrete professional restoration. Edges of boards lightly rubbed. Original leaf is near fine with just light foxing. Impression is strong with a woodcut on verso. Leaf measures approximately 10.75" X 7.5" and woodcut measures approximately 3.25" X 2.25". With a single leaf title page from the Dauber and Pine Bookshops. An excellent leaf with a near quarter-page woodcut from this famous English-language incunable. The leaf, "folio CCxiii" comprises the final two pages of the Life of Hippolytus. The quarter-page woodcut on the verso features the Assumption of Mary. Wynkyn de Worde was an apprentice of England's first printer, William Caxton, and is generally credited with refining Caxton's techniques and becoming England's first true typographer. This de Worde edition is just the second by him and the fourth overall printing of Caxton's translation of the Golden Legend. An excellent leaf, attractively presented, made especially desirable with the woodcut of Mary ascending into Heaven surrounded by five angels. Scarce. Not in Disbound and Dispersed. 1498
