Zutphen, 1621. Small oblong quarto. 19th century vellum. Very minor soiling and toning. Very good. A fundamentally important record of Dutch circumnavigation, military activity, and trade rivalry in the early 17th century, this narrative was first published in Leyden in 1619 and later published in French and the present Dutch, in 1621. It is appropriate that this volume contains the accounts of both Joris Van Spilbergen and Jacob Le Maire's voyages, since the two were intertwined. Van Spilbergen undertook his voyage on behalf of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Le Maire's father, Isaac, had had a falling out with the VOC in 1605. He outfitted his own vessel for a circumnavigation, captained by his son, Jacob, and by Willem Corneliszoon Schouten, in order to lessen the VOC's trade monopoly. The first part of this volume contains the account of Spilbergen's circumnavigation, while the later part treats the voyage of Le Maire. Of the two voyages, that of Le Maire and Schouten is the more significant. They discovered a new passage to the Pacific south of the Straits of Magellan, sailed around Tierra del Fuego, and named Cape Horn. Sailing to the west, they discovered the islands of the Taumoto Archipelago, the Tonga group, the Solomon Islands, and several islands along the northern coast of New Guinea. These discoveries contributed greatly to the European knowledge of the South Pacific.
