Original brown cloth, titles and decoration to spine and front covers in cream, illustrated endpapers in brown, top edge gilt, brown silk page marker. With the dust jacket. Colour frontispiece, 7 colour plates, all with captioned tissue-guards. Title page in red and black. Ownership inscription to front pastedown. Spine gently rolled, slight bumps to spine ends, an excellent copy in the jacket with lightly faded spine and slight creasing to top edge. First edition illustrated by Wheelhouse, first impression. Good Wives is the second part of Little Women, the first part of which was originally published in the US in 1868. Part two, which was published in early 1869, is usually only published as a second volume under the title Good Wives in British publications; both parts are commonly published together under the title Little Women. "Little Women is an outstanding achievement of 19th-century American literature, and the first children's novel written in that country to have become an enduring classic... It has inspired countless imitations... few of which have approached its achievement" (Oxford Companion to Children's Literature).
