Riccardo Bancker, 1791. A handsome, full calf leather-bound set of eight octavo volumes of Novelle del Bandello (in Italian) dated 1791-1793. All the volumes are in Very Good condition with no internal foxing (pages are whiter than appears in pic). Patterned polished calf, six panel spines bordered in ornate gilt, four of which have an exquisite gilt device inside consisting of a bird, sword, musical instrument and book (I think). Titles on red leather labels and volume numbers on black leather labels. Speckled edges. V1: Frontispiece [portrait by Emilio Lapi], [i-ii] iii-xx,1-417. Clean throughout on fine paper (vertical chain lines) with a little offsetting on lesser quality end-papers (two sets) and one hinge loosening at head and tail. V2: ditto, one hinge loosening and some loss to bottom of spine [1-2], 3-431. V3: ditto, firm [1-2], 3-450. V4: ditto, one board loosening a little, [1-2], 3-452. V5: firm [1-2], 3-442. V6: ditto, hinges loosening a little at lower edge, [1-2], 3-482. V7: ditto, firm, [1-2], 3-384. V9: ditto, a little loosening, [1-2], 3-436, + Index (complete with short novella descriptors, 437-459. Bindings rubbed with a little loss in places and a little splitting to leather to lower hinges (see photos) but all holding well and no loose pages/gatherings. No inscriptions. The first edition of this text appeared in 1554, published in Lucca, Tuscany. The stories are of the same genus as Boccaccio.
