[WYSS, Johann Davis; WYSS, Johann Rudolf]
[CHILDREN'S] Le Robinson suisse, ou Histoire d'une famille suisse naufragée;
traduit de l'allemand sur la dernière edition par Frédérich Muller ... Orné de huit vignettes de M. de Sainson, gravées sur acier par Beyer. Tours : Alfred Mame et Cie., 1839. Two volumes octavo, contemporary full green calf with embossed decoration, spines with gilt lettering and decoration (some minor chipping along the seams), marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, engraved frontispieces, pp 308, 272 (scattered spotting), illustrated. Johann David Wyss published his novel Der Schweizerische Robinson in 1812. The work was edited by his son, Johann Rudolf Wyss. Inspired by Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, it tells the story of a Swiss family shipwrecked on a desert island en route to Port Jackson in New South Wales. Madame Isabelle de Montolieu made the first French translation of Wyss' work, also altering the original ending of the story. Her version first appeared in print in 1814. The version offered here is faithful to Wyss' original story. Scarce. Unrecorded in Australian collections.
