WALTON (I) and C. COTTON. [ELLIS (H)] and J. HAWKINS, eds.:
The Complete [Compleat] Angler, or Contemplative Man's Recreation: being a Discourse on Rivers, Fish - Ponds, Fish, and Fishing. In Two Parts. [Bagster's Second Edition]. LARGE PAPER IN THEMED BINDING
Roy. 8vo., Second Edition thus, Large Paper, with engraved portrait frontispiece, engraved and printed titles (the former a facsimile of the first edition title), 12 engraved plates (including one of tackle and 2 musical scores) and 35 woodcut illustrations, facsimiles and maps in the text, some light and generally inoffensive age - staining; handsomely bound in later nineteenth - century dark green full calf, sides with double frame border enclosing lozenges tooled with fish, crewels and angling scenes all in gilt, back with four flat bands framed in gilt, second compartment with red leather label ruled and lettered in gilt, other four compartments tooled in gilt with fish, crewel, angling scene, fish in descending order, all edges gilt, marbled edges, gilt doublures, very neatly rebacked to style, a most attractive copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. A short tear in K2 professionally repaired. The 'present editor' is Henry Ellis of the British Museum. The text is collated with that of 1676 (the last published during Walton's life) together with several corrections and the most complete Index to date. The engravings of fish are a new series; the facsimile signatures appear here for the first time, the plates are mostly by Audinet after Wale. A lovely, albeit slightly aged, copy in unusual themed binding. LARGE PAPER COPIES ARE SCARCE. Coigney 21; Oliver 19; Slater p. 28; Westwood & Satchell pp.224 - 25
