The Arab historian, historiographer, and sociologist Ibn Khaldoun (1332 - 1406) is best-known for the work about which Schulz has written his commentary, the Muqaddimah. Schulz (1799 - 1829) was one of the first scholars to uncover evidence of the Kingdom of Urartu, an area centred on Lake Van in the Armenian Highlands in ninth to sixth centuries B. C. The present work contains comments on and translations from the preface to the Muqaddimah.
