Updike, John
In Love with a Wanton - Essays on Golf
Thornwillow Press, New York, 2005. Limited edition of 250. #51 signed by John Updike on the half title page. Also signed by the illustrator, Tania Lee and Luke Ives Pontifell who produced the book by hand. 1/2 leather brown morocco & paste paper, the book is custom crafted by hand and is the finest produced book a golfer can have in his library. Comes with the black cloth solander box as issued. 37 pages, the book is a collection of four short golf stories taken from Updike's writing in Golf Digest, The New Yorker and a prior book. Read the title carefully, it is derived from one of the four stories and does not refer to the chinese noodle but rather to Updike's essay comparing the game to a lascivious woman. It is brilliant! "She's an intuitive old girl; she sniffs you out while the club is still approaching horizontal. So why do I still lover her? Well, she's awfully pretty. All those green curves, and dewy swales, and snug little sand traps." Updike is a pulitzer prize winning author and the quality of his prose is evident when he speaks so eloquently of the game he loves. A unique and prized addition for the serious collector of golf books. Inimitable. We specialize in golf books. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]
