Antique drawing, titled: 'Het huis Merrewenvliet in de Provincie Overijssel, thans de herberg "de Ster.''' - Original drawing of part of a castle with a bridge over a moat leading to a gate. On the right a partly ruined building with a sign of a star. The drawing is loosely attached to a carrier sheet. The text at bottom right on the carrier sheet describes the scene as: 'the castle Merrewenvliet in the Province of Overijssel (The Netherlands), currently an Inn named "the Star". We have not been able to determine the exact location of this castle. Names might have changed. We would appreciate any input on this. ink and sepia drawing / grisaille on hand laid (verge) paper. Watermark: Van der Ley. Description: Exact age unknown c. 1770 (estimate). Provenance: Ex. Coll. S.P.D. May, which was auctioned by Mensing & co. in 1941. (Documentation of auction records included.)Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Dirk Verrijk' after own design. Theodorus / Dirk Verrijk / Verryck (1734-1786) was a Dutch draughtsman of landscape and city views, active 1760-1770. Condition: Very good, given age. Sheet with drawing attached to carrier with manuscript writing. Carrier sheet a thick woven paper wit overall light foxing. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. Storage location: TPCLA-E6-07 TPC. The overall size is ca. 17.9 x 12.2 inch. The image size is ca. 15.8 x 10.3 inch. The overall size is ca. 45.5 x 31 cm. The image size is ca. 40.2 x 26.2 cm.
