This crime novel follows the disappearance of the seventeen year old schoolgirl Valerie Taylor. Morse starts investigating the disappearance two years later, after the man inspecting the case is killed. Dexter is best known for his Inspector Morse crime series, which has been adapted into a TV series by ITV. He started his writing career by writing general studies textbooks, before starting his time series in 1972 during a family holiday.
