Rotterdam. Pieter van Waesberge, 1625. Quarto in fours, 22x17 cms. Handsomely leather bound in recent full red crushed morocco gilt by Haines. FIRST EDITION. Four parts bound in one. First part - half title, engraved title by J. Swelinck, portrait of Heyns by H. Goltius and 25 round emblematic plates. Collates- blank, 59 leaves including half title and engraved title, blank. (a-biv, A-Niv). Slight variation from Praz collation. Second part Sinne-Spel- title with vignette and crocodile on the verso, plus one plate. Collates as in Praz with vi, 49pp. Third part Emblemata Moralia- title, and 25 round emblematic plates. Collates title, one leaf, and 50 numbered leaves. Fourth part Deuchden-schole- title with vignette, and 5 engraved plates. Collates 5 unnumbered leaves, 55 numbered leaves, 2 unnumbered leaves as in Praz. Thus overall plates collate complete as in Praz - engraved title, 2 vignette titles, a portrait and 56 plates. The text collation varies slightly. A poetic miscellany of which the two parts containing the emblems are the most substantial. While the main text is in Dutch, the mottos and introductory verses are in French. The engraved title shows an astrological and a terrestrial globe. Some page toning. but basically a good copy. Collations seem to vary slightly. Praz- Studies in Seventeenth Century Imagery page 368.
