Published Pursuant to an Act of the General Assembly of Virginia, Passed on the Fifteenth Day of August 1849. Richmond: Printed by William F. Ritchie, Public Printer, 1849. xxxi, 898 pp. Octavo (9-1/2" x 5-3/4"). Contemporary calf, blind fillets to boards, blind fillets and red and black lettering pieces to spine, faint early owner signature at head. Light rubbing and a few minor stains and nicks, somewhat heavier rubbing to extremities, corners bumped, manuscript court document dated February 27, 1844 tipped-in to front pastedown, moderate toning and light foxing to text, light edgewer and a few minor tears to document. $750. * This was last edition of Virginia's statutes published before the Civil War. The document affixed to the front pastedown of our copy is a warrant by John H. Tabb of Gloucester County charging a County Justice of the Peace to "confine in jail for safekeeping a negro slave John." It is signed in pencil by JB Wm K. Smith; an address on its verso reads "Jailer of Gloucester County." This document may have been added to our copy to a serve as a model form for this procedure.
