James, M[ontague]. R[hodes]
1911. London: Edward Arnold, 1911. 2 pp undated ads plus 24 pp ads dated September 1911. Original grey cloth stamped in black. First Edition of James's second volume of ghost stories, following his original one in 1904. The fact that the volume consists of seven tales, and that seven years had elapsed since his first volume, is no coincidence: as he notes in his Preface, James wrote these for telling at Christmas-time, one for each successive season. Included is the well-known "Casting the Runes" (which in 1957 was filmed as "Night of the Demon") -- in which a researcher for the British Museum writes a review of a book on alchemy, only to discover that the other person who had reviewed that book died mysteriously a short time thereafter; it turns out that the book's author placed a curse on each reviewer by slipping them some runes on a slip of paper, and he has just 90 days in which to hand those runes back to the author... This volume does include the Autumn (September) 1911 ad catalogue; not all copies do. Condition is just about fine -- there is a bit of foxing on a few leaves at each end of the book, but there is essentially no soil nor wear. In our experience, James's MORE GHOST STORIES is considerably scarcer than his earlier GHOST STORIES. Bleiler 912.[Attributes: First Edition]
