A rectangular volume of 55 leaves of manuscript music of songs, with lyrics in French, on recto and verso, in the same hand throughout, measuring 220 x 140 mms., with a blank leaf before the first leaf of music, and another blank leaf at the end, with two leaves (one folded) of verse in English (one dated 1840) of in rectangular format, with neatly drawn and coloured ownership label on front paste-down endpaper, and another coloured drawing on rear end-paper, attractively bound in green morocco, with lyre in gilt on both covers and gilt roll borders, all edges gilt.
France C, 1840. One of the earliest compositions is attributed to "Mme. Gail," and there are other attributions including "Mm S. Gail" on other leaves. Sophia Gail (nee Garre, 1775 – 1819) published her first composition at the age of 19, and she composed a number of other works. The songs in the volume appear to have been transcribed by its 19th century owner, whose name appears on the ownership label, "Lucy [?Rosslyne Campibile]"
