Hodgman, Romanus
Manuscript surveyor's notebook of Lowell Massachusetts, 1848-1849
Lowell, MA, 1849. 8vo, approx. pp. 92, soft reverse calf, Hodgman's name in manuscript on upper cover along with a paper label "47," very good. With over 40 manuscript plats and surveys of various properties around Lowell, as well as estimates of requisite quantities of slate and gravel for specific building projects. Most interesting and visually attractive are eleven detailed meadow surveys, including several for both the meadows and the mills of S[amuel?] Fessenden, along with meadows of Baldwin, Wilson and Hadley. Included are parcels on Butterfield St., Central St., Cross St., Cushing St., etc. The last part of the book includes a detailed survey of a stream in Windham, NH for Robert J. Simpson related to the construction of a mill there. A label on the lower cover says "Have copied near all that is in this book into my book of plans. R. W. B." R. W. B. is perhaps Richard W. Baker, a civil engineer at Lowell during this period.
