Duckworh and Co. London. 1911. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (7.6 x 5.1 inches). Previous owner name, dated 1914, on the front blank free endpaper. Some very light spotting throughout but generally a clean and tight copy in the publishers original blue cloth with gilt lettering to the spine. Front board with some bubbling of the cloth to the bottom half inch and some rubbing and bumping to the extremities but overall in very good condition with gilt still bright on the spine. A bookplate has been neatly removed from the front pastedown endpaper and has left a little residue but there is no damage. Overall a very good copy of this scarce book. ----- An important and powerful novel in the Suffragette literary canon, which is notable not only for the accurate detail and passionate writing, but also for featuring a working class heroine in mill worker Jenny Clegg, at a time when much of the focus on the movement was on the middle and upper classes. The author notes in her preface '.though this book is entirely fiction as far as the characters are concerned, the later move among events that are historically real and true.'. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
