Several issues of the scarce American Yiddish magazine, Der Hammer, with covers by William Gropper. One of the most important Yiddish language periodicals outside of Europe, Der hammer (1926-1939) was the monthly magazine of the New York Communist daily, Di Morgen Freiheit. By 1925, the press run of the Freiheit grew to 22,000 copies per issue, making it the largest newspaper in the United States affiliated with the American Communist Party. The editor of both publications was Joseph Moissaye Olgin (1878-1939), a Russian-born writer, journalist and translator and founding member of the Workers Party of America. This collection includes several issues with cover illustration by William Gropper (1897-1977), an American cartoonist, painter, lithographer, and muralist, born to Jewish immigrants from Romania and Ukraine. He was a radical artist best known for his political paintings and cartoons.
