New York: Simon and Schuster, 1946. New York: Simon and Schuster,, 1946. Octavo. Original grey cloth, titles to spine and upper board in red. With 118 pages of plates from photographs by the author. A little toning to free endpapers. A superb copy in the dust jacket, with very minor nicking at extremities, yet a particularly nice example. First edition, first printing of Bourke-White's remarkable piece of post-war reportage; with photographs and anecdotes gathered in the immediate aftermath of World War II in what starts as an attempt to give a human face to "Faceless Fritz", and ends in an urgent indictment against the dehumanised soul of a nation divorced from "the democratic idea".
