Holiday card from Caspary to Lois and Roland Gelatt also laid in, in which Vera thanks Lois for her long letter and apologizes for her "disposition" upon a previous visit, saying, "I confess to being a spoiled and cranky woman when domestic help betrays me. Next time I'll do better." Roland Gelatt was a music critic and editor, best for known for his work, "The Fabulous Phonograph." Octavo. 171 pages. Bip Pares-illustrated dust jacket. Blue boards stamped in gilt. Unclipped dust jacket is worn along edges, shows general staining and toning, and 1 1/4" closed tear along rear joint. Boards worn with brief exposure to extremities. Front hinge cracked but binding sound. Light staining to fore edge but pages unmarked. Caspary's romance thriller detective novel was basis for the highly-praised 1944 Otto Preminger movie, named one of the ten best Mystery films of all time by the American Film Institute.
