Slim 8vo, pp. [2], 98, [12] ads; woodcut frontispiece of Traverse des Sioux; extremities rubbed, front joint broken but cords holding; all else generally very good in original calf-backed printed boards; the first book issued in printed boards in Minnesota. This copy inscribed by the Rev. Jonathon Austen Merrick who contributes here a three-page description (pp. 88-92) of the Fort Snelling district: "Miss Eliza Longsdon from her faithful frd. Rev. Jno. Austen Merrick, Galena, Illy. Oct. 1853." "One of the early specimens of printing in Minnesota Territory. Contains a graphic and truthful sketch of the Treaty of Mendota concluded with the Sioux on August 5, 1851, the Treaty with the Dacotahs and many other important records of relations with the Indians during that year together with the day-by-day journal of a tour into the Indian country. The Acts of the Legislative Assembly for the year are summarized, and appended to the volume are 8 [sic] pages of local business cards with crude illustrations" (Eberstadt).
