1612. Antwerp: Plantin, 1574, Latin edition. Coloured. 360 x 495mm. Pagination '60' on reverse erased and '81' added in old ink mss. A classic collector's map of Northern Europe after Olaus Magnus and Zeno, showing Britain and Scandinavia in detail, but also showing Greenland, part of North America and the mythical islands of Frisland, Brasil & St. Brendan. 'Drogeo' is believed to represent Newfoundland. In the Arctic (which is depicted in the form of Mercator's map of the North Pole) is a note 'Pigmys live here'! This example was printed for the 1574 edition of the 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum' but used in a 1579 issue. VAN DEN BROECKE: 160.2; BURDEN: 40.
